So you think you’re ready for an Alaskan Malamute?
There’s more to this magnificent breed than its impressive looks and loving nature. Bringing a Malamute into your life should be a well thought out decision. It is worth investing a lot of time and research before you consider them to be the right breed for you and your family. There are lots of great websites and books with an abundance of information about the breed (see our our links below) that can help you make your decision. Attending working events, shows and meeting with reputable breeders is also a great way to learn about the breed.
Malamutes have beautiful, harsh double coats that require weekly grooming and they also shed twice a year.
Most Malamutes just love to dig! Your garden may never be the same again! Watch out for digging under garden fences for an escape route!
They love company and do not like being left alone for long periods of time. They could howl until you arrive home.
Strength & Stamina
The Malamute is a freighting sled dog, featuring a powerful body, built for strength and stamina. They enjoy an active life.... a bored Malamute could become destructive. There are events and clubs throughout the UK designed for sled dogs, imitating disciplines similar to what they were bred for. They can offer help and advice regarding mushing activities, weight pulling and back packing. See our useful links
Alaskan Malamutes temperaments are extremely human affectionate, however it is not unusual for them to show dominance towards the same sex or different breeds
Although in rare circumstances, training recall can be successful, as a general rule, an off lead malamute could be a recipe for disaster... along with their selective hearing when they spot something a lot more interesting than you!!
Alaskan Malamutes can be a joy to live with but need an active lifestyle to ensure their needs are being met. They are a loyal companion with a huge personality, when raised correctly they will give you the most rewarding (if at times challenging) relationship!!
